একটা সময় ছিল ছাত্রছাত্রীরা কোনো রেফারেন্স বইয়ের সন্ধানে এক লাইব্রেরী থেকে আরেকক লাইব্রেরীতে ছুটে বেড়াতে হতো। এতে সময় ও অর্থের অপচয় হতো। কিন্ত প্রযুক্তির কল্যাণে আজ সেই অবস্থা অনেকখানি পাল্টে গেছে। এখন ইন্টারনেটের মাধ্যমে পৃথিবীর যেকোনো প্রান্তে থাকা একটি রেফারেন্স বই আপনি পেয়ে যাবেন (যদি আপনার প্রয়োজনীয় রেফারেন্স বইটির অনলাইন সংস্করণ থাকে) সহজেই।কাগজে মুদ্রিত রেফারেন্স বইয়ের চেয়ে অনলাইন রেফারেন্স বইয়ের দুটি সুবিধা বেশি। এক, অনলাইন রেফারন্স বই নিয়মিত আপডেট করা হয়। দুই, মুদ্রিত বইয়ে শুধু লেখা আর ছবি ছাপা থাকে, অন্যদিকে অনলাইন রেফারেন্স বইয়ে ভিডিও এবং অডিও যুক্ত থাকে।
এনসাইক্লোপেডিয়া : বর্তমানে বাজারে বেশ কিছু এনসাইক্লোপেডিয়া ডিভিডি ও সিডিতে পাওয়া যায়। কিন্ত এর সীমাবদ্ধতার কারণে অনলাইন সংস্করণগুলোই বেশি জনপ্রিয়।
